Key developments for UNITED STATES STEEL CORP (X)
In a regulatory filing, United States Steel Corp. stated that it expected to report an overall operating loss in the first quarter. In a report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on February 24, the company stated: "We continue to believe that the U.S. and global economies are in the early stages of a gradual recovery. While we are becoming more optimistic, primarily due to improvements we are starting to see in the manufacturing sector, we remain cautious in our outlook for end user demand." The company also said it would assess 100% acquisition opportunities, joint ventures and other arrangements in North America and internationally. Capital expenditures for the company in 2010 are expected to total about $530 million. Shares of the company traded at $56.61, up 31 cents.
United States Steel Corp. announced that Robert J. Beltz has been named as vice president-commercial, Europe. Beltz succeeds Peter J. Alvarado, who has concluded his assignment in Europe and is returning to the United States to a role that will be announced in the near future. Beltz will report to George F. Babcoke, senior vice president-European operations & president-U. S. Steel Kosice. The appointment was effective February 1, 2010. Beltz, 41, assumes responsibility for all commercial activity related to U. S. Steel's European operations. Beltz joined the company in 1990 as a management associate in accounting and finance. He assumed his most recent position, general manager-North American flat-rolled marketing, in April 2008.
United States Steel Corp. announced two advancements in the company's North American sales and marketing organizations. Robert Y. Kopf III has been appointed general manager-North American flat-rolled marketing. William L. Reder has been advanced to general manager-sales, which was Kopf's former position. Kopf will report to Senior Vice President-North American Flat-Roll Operations Michael S. Williams. Reder will report to Vice President-Sales Joseph R. Scherrbaum, Jr. The changes were effective Feb. 1, 2010. In his new role, Kopf, 43, will oversee industry market strategies, product mix distribution and pricing for U. S. Steel's flat-rolled operations in the United States and Canada. In 2004, Kopf relocated to Slovakia after being appointed managing director-sales and marketing for U. S. Steel Kosice. Kopf returned to Pittsburgh in 2007 to serve as manager-sales in the tin and container sales organization, assuming additional responsibilities as director-international sales in March 2008. He was named to his most recent position, general manager-sales, in January 2009. Reder, 45, will be responsible for sales activities related to North American flat-rolled products customers in the appliance, electrical, construction, sheet converter, tin and container markets. He will also oversee semi-finished product sales as well as sales of North American flat-rolled products outside the United States. In 2007, Reder was appointed managing director-sales and marketing for U. S. Steel Kosice and was based in the Slovak Republic. He returned to Pittsburgh in 2009 when he advanced to his most recent position, manager-sales in the tin and container sales organization.
