Spectrum K Awards 396 Forced Rebate Contracts for a Total of 200 Generic Drugs

Spectrum K, part of the BKK federal association of GKV funds has administrated a second round of rebate contracts aiming at selecting suppliers for a total of 200 generic drugs. The selected bidders will provide generics for the 73 German statutory health insurers which participated in the scheme. In the first tranche, Spectrum K's rebate scheme designated up to three different drug makers to supply one product while the second has seen Spectrum K award only one contract per active ingredient. Spectrum K's second rebate scheme will enter into force from 1 January 2011 and will last two years. According to Spectrum K, rebate contracts will help reach savings of several million euros. German generics maker Stada appeared as the winning bidder with a total of 88 contracts awarded for 73 active ingredients in this large-scale tender. The drug maker was already the race for Spectrum K's first rebate scheme, having gained a total of 57 contracts, in force since March 2010, and those for a two-year period. Stada was, for this second wave of rebate contracts, followed by Ratiopharm (now part of Teva, Israel) which won a total of 69 contracts for 63 active ingredients. The market leader Sandoz--part of Novartis, Switzerland--failed to strike the first position in this tender and was only awarded 59 contracts for a total of 57 active ingredients. Meanwhile, local player Heunet and U.S.-based Mylan both won 18 contracts while Sanofi-Aventis' generic subsidiary Winthrop and local firm Neuraxpharm were both awarded 15 rebate contracts. Icelandic firm Actavis and German Betapharm both won 11 discounted contracts. A total of 51 drug companies signed discounted agreements with Spectrum K for this second wave, set to last until 2013.
Novartis to Build Vaccine Plant in Brazil

Novartis AG plans to build Latin America's first vaccine factory in Brazil with an investment of $300 to $500 million. The plant, which will be located near the northeastern city of Recife, would begin producing vaccines in early 2014 for domestic and foreign markets. Construction begins in 2010. The company already has a factory in Sao Paulo and another in Rio that synthesize chemical raw materials for drugs. A third facility in the southern state of Parana makes generic drugs under the Sandoz label.
Novartis Signs License Deal with Quark Pharmaceuticals

Novartis AG signed a deal with Quark Pharmaceuticals Inc. for up to $670 million to gain license to Quark's experimental drug to help kidney damage. Under the deal, Novartis will have the option to obtain an exclusive license worldwide to QPI-1002. The drug will be used to prevent kidney injury to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Novartis will pay $10 million upfront, and will make milestone payments that could bring the total sum to $670 million.
