Key developments for INTEL CORP (INTC)
Intel Corporation and RealVNC Limited have collaborated to embed VNC remote control technology in the all new 2010 Intel Core vPro processor family to provide IT professionals with a built-in, graphical remote control capability to facilitate problem diagnosis and resolution. KVM and KVM-over-IP solutions have been available for many years in the form of external hardware add-ons. Intel's collaboration with RealVNC makes KVM functionality a feature of Intel vPro Technology. This solution enables IT professionals, with PCs based on Intel vPro technology, to see the system as the user sees it providing an advantage even when client software is not functioning, or while PCs are rebooting, in BIOS setup screens or an operating system failure. In combination with the other Intel vPro Technology features, IT departments can troubleshoot and in many cases recover systems viewing the system as if they were physically there, helping reduce downtime to a minimum. A premium version of VNC viewer, VNC Viewer Plus will support the embedded KVM capabilities of the 2010 Intel Core vPro processor-based PCs. RealVNC worked closely with Intel to include Intel vPro Technology features of remote reboot, remote power-on, IDE redirection and enhanced security features in VNC Viewer Plus. RealVNC and Intel will enable ISVs to integrate KVM viewer into ISVs' existing console products for remote control.
Intel Corporation and Orange SA have announced a strategic agreement to deliver Orange multimedia services across a number of devices based on the Intel Atom processor and MeeGo software platform. MeeGo, a result of a merger of the Moblin and Maemo software projects, enables an open software environment for development of a range of PC-like devices and new services. By establishing a common software framework across multiple devices, ranging from smartphones and tablets to netbooks, Intel and Orange intend to simplify access to mobile and personalized internet and drive uptake of new and existing applications and services. The alliance said MeeGo builds on the capabilities of the Moblin core OS and its support for a range of device types and reference user experiences, combined with the momentum of Maemo in the mobile industry and the Qt application and UI framework for software developers. The companies will work to increase the availability of Orange Signature Services, such as Orange TV and Orange Maps, supported by the MeeGo environment. The companies will also work to harness the potential of a converging computing and communication's platform enabling customers to access services across multiple devices and screens.
Intel Corporation announced to launch eight-core Nehalem-EX in March. The Nehalem-EX chip will be targeted at four-socket servers, and each physical core will be able to run two threads simultaneously. Intel will release its fastest and highly anticipated eight-core Nehalem-EX server processor later this month. The processor will be targeted at four-socket servers, said Shannon Poulin, Xeon platform director at Intel. Each physical core will be able to run two threads simultaneously, giving the chip 64 virtual processing cores on servers. Intel is targeting the chip at high-end systems running data-intensive applications such as databases. IBM earlier this week said it would implement Nehalem-EX chips in its System x EX5 servers. The chip will be made using the 45-nanometer process, and be based on the Nehalem microarchitecture, which integrates the memory controller and improves system speed by cutting data bottlenecks that plagued Intel's earlier chips. Intel is also including new technologies like MCA recovery error correction that could make servers more fault tolerant and provide greater uptime, he said. The processor will be able to detect system errors originating in the CPU or system memory and correct them by working with the operating system. Some of these technologies have been adapted from Intel's high-end Itanium processors, which are based on a separate chip architecture and go into fault-tolerant systems. The new processor will also contain separate buffered memory chips that can store data temporarily alongside the main memory for faster task execution.
