GlaxoSmithKline plc opened a new manufacturing facility in the Indian city of Nashik for the production of albendazole, a drug for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis/elephantiasis. The drug will be produced specifically to facilitate the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF). The total cost of the facility has been pegged at $330,000, and the factory aims to deliver 300 million tablets of albendazole annually, valued at $13.5 million. Production started in December 2009, and so far 15 million albendazole tablets have been produced.

Andrew Witty, the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline PLC, said on March 8 that the company is looking to expand in India both through acquisitions and core business growth. "Opportunities will be evaluated based on a variety of factors, including the strategic nature of the fit," he told reporters on the sidelines of a company event. India continues to be an important market for GSK, he added.
