Google Inc. and the Associated Press Reach Content Licensing Agreement

Google Inc. and the Associated Press reached a licensing agreement that will allow the search giant to continue hosting content from the US news agency. It replaces an agreement that expired in January, 2010. The agreement allows Google to display AP content on such properties as Google News, the search giant's popular news aggregator. Under the agreement, Google and the Associated Press will work together in a number of new areas, such as ways to improve discovery and distribution of news.

Paul Allen Sues 11 Companies in Seattle Alleging Patent Infringement

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sued in Seattle August 27, 2010, contending Apple, Google and others are profiting illegally from patents he owns. The 11 companies named in the suit filed in U.S. District Court are using technology created years ago by Allen's now-defunct Palo Alto. The suit alleges the companies have used technology covered by four of his patents. Besides Apple and Google, the defendants include Facebook, eBay Inc., AOL, Inc., Netflix Inc., Office Depot Inc., OfficeMax Inc., Staples Inc., Yahoo Inc. and Google's YouTube subsidiary. Microsoft was not among them. No dollar figure was listed for the amount of damages being sought. Allen, 57, is worth an estimated $13.5 billion.

Google Inc. Launches Search Page for Real-Time Online Posts

Google Inc. further embraced the world of tweets, status updates, and on-the-fly posts with a website devoted to finding "real-time" content as it hits the Internet. A search engine being rolled out in 40 countries at google.com/realtime builds on features that the Internet powerhouse has been adding incrementally to its online query service. The new one is tailored to comments, images or other public content fired off at online social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. With the advent of these platforms it is easier for people to publish content, and there is more content on the Web. The real-time home page adds features including being able to search based on location and being able to get "alerts" when anyone blogs, tweets, or otherwise comments online about selected topics, brands, or names. Google real-time search features include being able to follow public conversations in online forums and being able to "playback" exchanges dating back to nearly the start of the year. Google is working with Twitter to make its entire public archive available in a way that remains in synch with people deleting tweets or changing privacy settings on accounts at the microblogging service.
