Key developments for CISCO SYSTEMS INC (CSCO)
Cisco Systems, Inc. announced a major advancement in Internet networking, the Cisco(R) CRS-3 Carrier Routing System (CRS), designed to serve as the foundation of the next-generation Internet and set the pace for the astonishing growth of video transmission, mobile devices and new online services through this decade and beyond. With more than 12 times the traffic capacity of the nearest competing system, the Cisco CRS-3 is designed to transform the broadband communication and entertainment industry by accelerating the delivery of compelling new experiences for consumers, new revenue opportunities for service providers, and new ways to collaborate in the workplace. The Cisco CRS-3 triples the capacity of its predecessor, the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System, with up to 322 Terabits per second, which enables the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress to be downloaded in just over one second; every man, woman and child in China to make a video call, simultaneously; and every motion picture ever created to be streamed in less than four minutes. The Cisco CRS-3 enables unified service delivery of Internet and cloud services with service intelligence spanning service provider Internet Protocol Next-Generation Networks and data center. The Cisco CRS-3 also provides unprecedented savings with investment protection for the nearly 5,000 Cisco CRS-1 deployed worldwide. Cisco's cumulative investment in the Cisco CRS family is $1.6 billion, further underscoring the company's commitment. The Cisco CRS-3 offers dramatic operational expense savings and up to 60% savings on power consumption compared to competitive platforms. The Cisco CRS-3 also delivers significant capital expenditures savings and investment protection for existing Cisco CRS-1 customers. The new capabilities in the platform can be achieved by reusing the existing chassis, route processors, fans and power systems with the addition of new line cards and fabric. These upgrades can be performed in-service and be provided by Cisco Services to ensure a smooth transition.
Cisco Systems, Inc. announced that it is upgrading one of its biggest pieces of networking hardware, a router that's used to power the most trafficked parts of the Internet backbone. Routers play an important role as the Internet's traffic cops, shunting packets of data to their destinations. Those placed at the Internet's backbone the main arteries for traffic need the most capacity given the amount of data passing through. These machines are known as core routers, and Cisco competes in this market with Juniper Networks Inc., which has updated its products more recently than Cisco. Cisco said it is replacing its aging CRS-1 core router, which was introduced in 2004, with a model that is three times faster, the CRS-3. It can handle 322 terabits of traffic per second, or simultaneous video calls for every person in China, Cisco said. The CRS-3 will be available in the third quarter and sell for $90,000 and up.
Deutsche Telekom AG announced that the Deutscher FuA ball Bund, will use its Deutschland Tele-Presence service to help with preparations for the 2010 World Cup. In collaboration with Cisco, Deutsche Telekom will be equipping the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt and the national team coach, Joachim Law, and his staff with a live conferencing solution. The complete package comprises Cisco Tele-Presence systems, broadband network connections, tele-presence services, security and technical customer support. The service, which uses high-definition video and wideband audio to create an immersive meeting experience, will enable the president, secretary, coaches and managers to have important face-to-face discussions about team strategy and reach agreements faster, irrespective of their location.
