Key developments for RESEARCH IN MOTION (RIMM)
Research In Motion Limited announced that U.A.E Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has ruled out plans to block BlackBerry services in the country. The regulatory authority is studying all options to regulate the services, but don't have plans to stop them. According to the regulator, the services provided by the BlackBerry manufacturer, Research in Motion (RIM) such as email and instant messaging use some of the most advanced encryption techniques on their networks that are difficult for governments to monitor. The BlackBerry device generates its own 'master key' which encrypts sent messages. The data is then sent to an overseas network operating centre located in either Canada or the United Kingdom. From there, the messages are relayed to the recipient's wireless provider, which in turn delivers them to their BlackBerry device and decrypts them. The 'master key' is kept on the device for 30 days, after which a new key is generated. The old key is kept on the device for seven days before it is deleted. RIM will of course not provide a master key for access to the messages which will pose difficulty for the TRA as it needs to overcome the data storage issue. The BlackBerry handset was launched prior to the safety, emergency and national security legislation set in 2007; technically the handset is operating outside of the U.A.E legal standards.
Research In Motion Limited plans to launch its Mobile Voice System (MVS) 5.0 voice over Wi-Fi platform in all of Latin America in August or September. MVS is currently available in Mexico and Brazil working with Cisco Unified Communications Manager to provide business users the ability to make and receive calls on their regular desk phone and extension number, but from their BlackBerry over a Wi-Fi connection. With MVS, outgoing calls are routed through the corporate IP PBX system, which helps save on long distance and international roaming charges. RIM has said the functionality will be particularly useful for companies that want their workers to be able to keep in regular contact but not rack up big cell phone calls, some of which could potentially be non-work related.
Research In Motion has released another "sneak peek" video, showing off features that BlackBerry smartphone fans can expect from RIM's newest OS, BlackBerry 6, which is scheduled to debut this summer. The video shows BlackBerry 6's new user interface, its redesigned home screen, context-sensitive pop-up menus, a universal search functionality and an enhanced media interface. The arrow-style cursor of most devices is here replaced with an angelic glowing orb--think: BlackBerry Pearl trackball. Adding new subscribers is RIM's goal--and BlackBerry 6 is its bet-the-bank venture for competing with Apple's iPhones and the increasing number of feature-rich Android-running smartphones joining the market. BlackBerry 6, which Lazaridis showed off that day, will allow users to access more than one Web page at a time, search from the home screen and see bookmark-type information in different views. RIM has also redesigned all of the core applications--e-mail, messaging, calendar and contacts--in BlackBerry 6 and added social-networking tools and RSS feeds.
