Singapore Air Orders Eight Boeing 777s to Tap Travel Demand

The airplane, 19 percent lighter than its closest
competitor according to Boeing, may also help Singapore Airlines
control costs as rising jet fuel prices damp industry profit.
Fuel will represent 29 percent of airline expenses in 2011, the
second-highest proportion on record, according to International
Air Transport Association estimates.
Jet fuel prices rose 35 percent in the past 12 months to
$121.60 a barrel on Aug. 8 in Singapore, according to Bloomberg
data.
The Singapore Airlines 777-300ERs will have a three-class
layout, according to the carrier’s statement.
Airbus SAS. The latest order brings the number of purchase and
lease orders with the two manufacturers to 70, including those
for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787, the company said.
